Leaders, supporters greet as PM Modi becomes India’s longest-serving Prime Minister
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic political milestone by becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted office, surpassing the record held by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. On June 10, 2026, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office, one day more than Nehru’s 4,398-day tenure following India’s first general election.
The achievement marks another landmark in Modi’s political journey, which began when he first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014. Since then, he has led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victories in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections, securing successive terms in 2014, 2019 and 2024.
Political leaders in India and abroad acknowledged the milestone. Messages of congratulations poured in from various quarters, highlighting Modi’s influence on India’s governance, economy and global standing over the past 12 years.
Supporters of the Prime Minister described the achievement as a reflection of sustained public trust and political stability. Across several states, BJP workers marked the occasion with celebrations and public events.
During Modi’s tenure, India has witnessed significant policy initiatives and reforms, including the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), expansion of digital payments through UPI, manufacturing-focused programmes, welfare schemes, and major constitutional and administrative decisions. His government has also emphasized infrastructure development, economic growth and a stronger international profile for India.
Economic indicators have undergone substantial changes during this period. India’s economy has more than doubled in size since 2014, while digital transactions and financial inclusion have expanded rapidly. Stock market benchmarks have also recorded significant gains over the course of Modi’s administration.
Earlier, in July 2025, Modi surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s record to become India’s second-longest-serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms. With the latest milestone, he has now moved to the top position among elected Prime Ministers serving continuously after a general election.
While Modi now holds the record for the longest uninterrupted elected tenure as Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister by total time in office, having served from August 1947 until May 1964.
As Modi enters the third year of his third consecutive term, the record further strengthens his place in India’s political history and underscores the enduring impact of his leadership on the country’s contemporary political landscape.
