Why Rajinikanth rejected Baashha 2 and Petta 2 before choosing Jailer 2
Superstar Rajinikanth has explained why he declined proposals to continue two of his popular films, Baashha and Petta, before deciding that Jailer offered the right foundation for a sequel.
Speaking at the Jailer 2 Super Show pre-release event, streamed on Sun NXT, the actor said he was generally cautious about sequels. In his view, follow-up films can sometimes repeat the original formula with only minor additions rather than introduce a compelling new story.
Rajinikanth revealed that Sathya Movies had approached him several times about Baashha 2, drawing on an idea associated with late producer R. M. Veerappan. He also turned down a proposal from director Karthik Subbaraj for Petta 2, which would have continued the story involving Vijay Sethupathi’s character.
His thinking changed when he revisited Jailer after its streaming release. A warning from Varma about a larger network behind Tiger, along with the sequence involving three containers carrying goods, prompted him to see the possibility of expanding the story.
Rajinikanth believed these details could lead to a sequel with a meaningful narrative rather than a simple repetition of the first film.
Director Nelson Dilipkumar was initially unsure whether the original film left enough material for another instalment. After taking about a month to reconsider the idea, he returned with a more developed concept.
Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back together with Nelson and composer Anirudh Ravichander. The ensemble includes S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jatin Sarna, alongside returning cast members Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 15, setting up another major release for Rajinikanth’s fans.
