Vijay expands breakfast scheme to cover students up to Class VIII
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has expanded the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme to include students from Classes VI to VIII.
The expansion was formally launched at a government middle school in Gandhi Gramam, Thiruvanmiyur. Vijay served breakfast to students, joined them during the meal and later visited classrooms to interact with the children.
Officials said the expansion will benefit about 15.30 lakh additional students studying in 15,454 government and state-aided schools across the state.
The programme, named after former Chief Minister K Kamaraj, is intended to support children’s nutrition and ensure that students begin their school day after having a nutritious meal.
The state government has allocated an additional Rs 217.63 crore during the current financial year for the expanded programme. This takes the overall budget for the breakfast scheme to Rs 724 crore.
