Tamil Nadu Assembly polls: TVK set to emerge as single largest party

In just two years since its founding, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, leading in 108–109 seats out of 234.

This feat, unmatched in state history, has seen TVK topple traditional Dravidian strongholds, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and several senior DMK ministers trailing in their constituencies.

The AIADMK holds second place, while the DMK has slipped to third, in a high-turnout election that recorded 84.69% voter participation.

TVK’s surge signals the first serious break from the DMK-AIADMK duopoly that has ruled Tamil Nadu since 1967.

Drawing comparisons to landmark shifts in 1967 and 1977, the result reflects widespread anti-incumbency, especially among young voters in urban centres, and disillusionment with corruption and dynastic politics.

Vijay’s campaign positioned TVK as a clean, Tamil-pride-driven alternative, eating into both opposition and ruling party vote banks.

Vijay’s debut success has drawn congratulatory messages from political leaders like Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and film stars across India, from Tiger Shroff to Kajal Aggarwal.

The victory revives Tamil Nadu’s tradition of cinema icons entering politics, with parallels drawn to M.G. Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa. What sets Vijay apart is the speed of his ascent, achieving electoral dominance without years of cadre-building.
