Proposed US sanctions bill raises concerns over India’s Russian oil imports

A revised Russia sanctions bill introduced by a bipartisan group of US senators has renewed concerns about the potential impact on countries purchasing Russian energy, including India.

The proposed legislation includes provisions that could impose steep tariffs on imports from nations that continue buying Russian oil. India, one of the largest importers of Russian crude, could be affected if the measure eventually becomes law.

The latest version of the bill was introduced after the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, who had strongly supported tougher sanctions targeting Russia’s energy revenues.

Although the legislation still faces several stages before becoming law—and an earlier version made little progress in Congress—the proposal has attracted attention because of its possible implications for India’s energy security, crude oil imports and ongoing trade discussions with the United States.
