PM Modi stresses AI, data and coordination in meeting with Secretaries

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held his third high-level meeting with government secretaries, reviewing the future priorities of ministries and departments working on areas including infrastructure, connectivity, security, external affairs and governance.

Modi said government officials should look beyond immediate problems and statistics and develop a long-term vision for the country’s development.

A major focus of the meeting was the problem of departmental silos. The Prime Minister said these barriers are not simply structural issues but can also reflect organisational attitudes. He called on officials to take ownership of their responsibilities while maintaining stronger cooperation across departments.

Referring to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the West Asia crisis, Modi noted that different government departments had demonstrated the value of coordinated action during emergencies. He said such cooperation should become part of routine governance rather than being activated only during crises.

The Prime Minister also encouraged officials to explore practical uses of artificial intelligence while ensuring that human judgement remains central to decision-making.

Data was another key theme. Modi described government data as a national asset and called for better interoperability between systems so that information collected by different departments can be used more effectively.

He also urged closer interaction among government agencies, universities and young people. According to the Prime Minister, such engagement could introduce fresh and unconventional ideas into policymaking.
