PM Modi launches India’s first hydrogen-powered train
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to adopt cleaner transportation technology.
The train will operate on the 89-kilometre Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana under the Northern Railway. The pilot project uses hydrogen fuel cell technology to generate electricity, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains. Supporting infrastructure, including hydrogen storage and refuelling facilities, has also been established.
The Prime Minister said the launch places India among a select group of nations using hydrogen-powered rail technology and highlighted its role in advancing sustainable transportation.
Officials said the pilot project will help evaluate the technology before considering wider implementation across the railway network.
