NPCIL says leaked Kudankulam project files pose no nuclear safety risk

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has confirmed that documents related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant were leaked online from the servers of Reliance Infrastructure. However, the corporation stated that the leaked information does not compromise nuclear safety.

According to NPCIL, the documents relate only to the plant’s Balance of Plant infrastructure, which includes support systems such as pipelines, water supply networks, roads, drainage and other conventional facilities. The leaked material does not include information about the reactor or other critical nuclear safety systems.

The clarification comes after reports that more than 19,000 files linked to the project appeared on the dark web following a cyberattack allegedly carried out by the ransomware group World Leaks.

NPCIL explained that Reliance Infrastructure received the Balance of Plant contract through a public tender in 2018. As part of the bidding process, the company was provided with technical specifications and reference drawings before preparing detailed engineering designs.

The corporation emphasised that these support systems are commonly found in many industrial and thermal power projects and that the disclosure does not create any direct threat to nuclear security.
