New EPF rules make contributions above wage ceiling optional

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has introduced a revised Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 2026, under which EPF contributions on wages above the notified salary ceiling have become voluntary.

The current wage ceiling remains ₹15,000 per month. Under the previous framework, employees covered by EPF generally continued contributing on their full basic salary, with employers matching those contributions even when wages exceeded the ceiling.

The new scheme provides that mandatory employer and employee contributions will be calculated only up to the notified wage ceiling. Contributions on higher wages may continue only if both employer and employee choose to do so, subject to applicable provisions.

The notification also retains the standard contribution rate of 12 per cent each from employers and employees.

The move follows earlier pension reforms introduced in 2014, which limited employer contributions to the Employees’ Pension Scheme to wages up to the statutory ceiling. The latest changes provide greater flexibility by allowing organisations and employees to decide whether to contribute beyond that limit.

The Labour Ministry has not yet issued a detailed clarification regarding the practical implementation of the revised provisions.
