N Chandrasekaran to step down as Tata Sons Chairman
N Chandrasekaran has decided not to seek another term as chairman of Tata Sons, bringing his nine-year tenure at the helm of the Tata Group to an end in February 2027.
Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board that he would remain in the position until his existing term expires on February 20, 2027, but would not offer himself for reappointment.
His decision comes amid differences within Tata Trusts, which collectively hold a controlling 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons. According to the account surrounding his announcement, a proposal for another five-year term had received support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust but failed to secure unanimous backing at the Tata Sons board.
Chandrasekaran said the proposal had been recommended through the appropriate board processes but was not taken forward after one board member did not support it. He said that six months after the board meeting, no final resolution had been reached.
Chandrasekaran has led Tata Sons since 2017 after previously heading Tata Consultancy Services. During his tenure, he oversaw a period of significant expansion and strategic restructuring across the conglomerate.
He is the first non-Parsi to serve as chairman of the Tata Group and has spent about four decades with the organisation.
Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata has also been involved in discussions over the group’s future leadership. Noel became chairman of Tata Trusts in 2024 following the death of Ratan Tata.
Chandrasekaran said that Tata Sons was involved in several major strategic projects and that identifying his successor well before the end of his tenure would be important for employees, investors and other stakeholders.
He has therefore asked the Tata Sons board to begin the succession process soon to ensure an orderly transition.
Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the Tata Group and oversees a large portfolio of businesses, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors and Air India.
