Heavy rain brings Delhi to a standstill, waterlogging disrupts traffic across the city
Persistent rainfall on Friday caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across several parts of Delhi, leaving commuters stranded and disrupting normal movement throughout the day.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate to heavy showers are expected toheavy traffic continue until later in the day, with rainfall intensity likely to reduce from Saturday. Light rain is forecast over the following two days.
Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road witnessed some of the most severe flooding, particularly near the Air Force Station, where rainwater accumulated to several feet in certain stretches. The inundated roadway forced vehicles to move at a crawl, while some motorists were unable to proceed.
Waterlogging was also reported from Okhla Mor, Khanpur, Sangam Vihar, Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar, leading to lengthy traffic snarls along one of South Delhi’s busiest corridors.
Motorcyclists and auto-rickshaw drivers were among the worst affected, with several vehicles breaking down after entering flooded sections. Long queues of office commuters were seen waiting as traffic remained slow-moving.
Visuals from the affected areas showed military vehicles assisting people in crossing heavily waterlogged stretches near the Air Force Station.
Apart from MB Road, traffic delays were reported on several major routes, including ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.
Eastern parts of the city, including GT Road, GTB Enclave and Dilshad Garden, also experienced slow-moving traffic due to water accumulation.
Several low-lying neighbourhoods such as Dakshinpuri, Okhla, Sangam Vihar and Sainik Farms witnessed flooding after continuous rainfall, adding to the day’s commuting challenges.
Authorities have advised motorists to remain cautious while travelling through flood-prone areas as weather conditions continue to remain unstable.
