“Balan: The Boy” Movie Review
A refreshing survival drama anchored by strong performances
Following the phenomenal success of Manjummel Boys, director Chidambaram returns with an emotionally charged survival drama, backed by a screenplay from Jithu Madhavan. Carrying the weight of expectations, the film offers a compelling blend of suspense, heartfelt moments and memorable performances, making it an engaging watch.
The story revolves around Indhu, who also goes by Mary and Sherly, a young single mother trying to outrun a troubled past. Determined to give her little son a better life, she constantly changes identities and occupations to protect them both. However, when fate separates mother and child, the boy is left with no way of finding her, setting the stage for a moving tale of survival, resilience and hope.
Chidambaram once again demonstrates his flair for immersive storytelling. The first half is particularly captivating, built around a fresh concept and layered narrative. The director skillfully explores themes of childhood trauma and emotional scars with sensitivity, keeping the audience invested in the characters’ journey.
One of the film’s biggest strengths is the performance of child actor Adhisheshan KR. The young talent effortlessly carries the title role, bringing innocence, humour and emotional depth to the screen. His natural charm adds warmth even to the more intense moments, making him an absolute delight to watch. Farzana Palathingal delivers a restrained and nuanced performance, effectively portraying a woman burdened by secrets and struggles. Tovino Thomas, as Abbas, leaves a strong impression with a character that is both intriguing and emotionally layered.
The film maintains a sense of tension throughout, while also carrying an underlying sadness that lends poignancy to the narrative. Though the emotional highs are understated, the climax offers an interesting and thoughtful resolution that stays true to the story’s tone.
Powered by a unique premise, assured direction and standout performances, particularly from Adhisheshan KR, this survival drama succeeds in delivering a touching and engaging experience. It may not rely on grand emotional flourishes, but its sincerity and quiet moments make it a worthwhile watch.
