₹13,000 crore push: Modi launches major infrastructure projects in Tamil Nadu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and launched infrastructure initiatives worth approximately ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, with projects spanning transport, roads, railways and port-related development.

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of metro services along the Porur Bypass–Poonamallee stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay accompanied Modi during the programme, which also included a visit to the Arulmigu Jalakandeswarar Temple on the IIT Madras campus.

Speaking at the event, Modi described the occasion as an important milestone for Tamil Nadu, highlighting the potential of infrastructure investment to improve connectivity, support businesses and generate employment.

He said stronger public transport networks could make urban life more convenient while helping industrial and commercial activity expand.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the relationship between India’s cultural traditions and its scientific and technological progress. Referring to his years in public office, he said his experience had strengthened his belief in democratic institutions and cooperative federalism.

Modi recalled working with several Tamil Nadu leaders across different political administrations, including Jayalalithaa, O. Panneerselvam, Edappadi K. Palaniswami and M. K. Stalin.

He said changes in political leadership would not diminish his commitment to the state’s progress, adding that his government would continue working with Vijay’s administration.

The projects are intended to strengthen transport links and support economic activity across Tamil Nadu. However, the state’s wider demands concerning funding, additional metro networks and other infrastructure proposals remain separate issues on which the Chief Minister is seeking further action from the Centre.
