“Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai ” Movie Review

Director Ram’s Philosophical, Whimsical and Emotionally Rich Journey

Director Ram’s Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, starring Nivin Pauly, Anjali and Soori, is an unusual cinematic experience that blends fantasy, philosophy, romance and human emotion. Rather than following a conventional narrative, the film takes audiences on a fascinating journey through time, exploring love, compassion, mortality and what it truly means to be human.

The film begins with an aunt narrating a bedtime story to a child. At its heart is the tale of a mysterious immortal man who has lived for more than 8,000 years. Though death can never claim him, he continues to search for a woman who has appeared in his life through different reincarnations and across different periods of history.

During one of these journeys, he encounters a Dubai-returned man, played by Soori, who is eagerly looking forward to meeting his son after eight years. Their unexpected meeting sets off a series of intriguing and often surprising events. Through their relationship, Ram creates an engaging contrast between an immortal being who has witnessed centuries of human history and an ordinary man caught up in the concerns of everyday life.

Nivin Pauly’s character becomes the philosophical heart of the film. His conversations about ancient civilizations, human existence, animals and compassion add layers of meaning to the narrative. The film consistently asks audiences to look beyond the boundaries between humans and other living beings and to consider the value of every life.

One of the film’s most interesting aspects is its refusal to follow conventional character identities. Characters remain largely nameless, giving the story a timeless quality. Ram also experiments with language, moving between colloquial Tamil and a more literary style, creating a distinctive rhythm.

The imaginative use of AI-generated visuals featuring birds and animals further strengthens the film’s fantasy world, allowing nature itself to become part of the storytelling.

Nivin Pauly brings remarkable charm and depth to his eccentric, immortal character. Soori adds warmth and humour, while Anjali contributes emotional strength to the story. Cinematographer N.K. Ekambaram beautifully captures locations including the Western Ghats and Dhanushkodi, giving the film a magical visual quality.

Ultimately, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is a bold and heartfelt exploration of humanity. Its themes of love that transcends time, compassion, longing and the endless journey of life make it an intriguing film that stays with the audience long after the credits roll.
