Will suspend bus strike till January 19, transport unions tell HC

The indefinite strike that was started by Tamil Nadu transport unions on Tuesday has been called off, with buses set to resume services from Thursday. The transport strike had raised concerns amongst residents as the Tamil festival ‘Pongal’ is just around the corner.

The unions have demanded the signing of the 15th wage revision agreement to increase pay and fill the vacant posts for bus drivers and conductors.

The transport union informed the Madras High Court about the temporary suspension of the strike until January 19, when the next round of conciliation talks is scheduled with the government.

“The Madras High Court has ordered transport unions to temporarily withdraw their strike. After the meeting, we will make the decision. For the past two days, there was no problem because of the strike,” said Tamil Nadu Transport Minister SS Sivashankar, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The transport unions emphasised that resuming work was in the interest of the public.
