“Vowels” Movie Review
Vowels attempts an ambitious and creative storytelling format, presenting five short films that each explore a different shade of love. Structured around the five vowels, the anthology brings together themes such as attraction, emotion, intimacy, obsession, and unconditional love, offering viewers a variety of perspectives on one of cinema’s most timeless subjects. Even though love has been portrayed countless times in films, music, and literature, Vowels tries to revisit the theme with a fresh visual style and emotional lens.
Each segment introduces unique characters and situations that highlight the complexity of relationships. Sangeeth Nath’s opening story takes a bold and artistic approach, blending fashion photography and cinematic symbolism to explore the darker side of attraction. Jagan Rajendran’s segment reflects on the lingering emotions of past relationships, presenting a familiar yet relatable look at love and heartbreak through a reflective flashback structure.
Santhosh Ravi’s chapter brings a softer and more emotional tone. The story of a wheelchair-bound cancer patient and a nature photographer unfolds with tenderness, capturing the quiet beauty of connection and compassion. Its gentle pace allows the audience to absorb the emotional depth of the characters and their shared moments.
Dhilip Kumar’s segment stands out with its warmth and humor. With Yugi Sethu leading the narrative as a talkative stranger who stops a man from taking a tragic step, the story unfolds into a heartfelt tale about long-lost love involving Chinni Jayanth. The combination of comedy and emotion gives this portion a lively and uplifting energy.
Hemanth Kumar’s closing chapter takes a more experimental route, layering dreams and emotions in a visually imaginative way. Overall, Vowels showcases the efforts of multiple filmmakers coming together to interpret love through different moods, styles, and storytelling approaches, creating a thoughtful and visually engaging anthology experience.
