Vijay’s political tightrope: Rahul Gandhi over coffee, Modi on the Metro

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has sent a message of political pragmatism through two contrasting public engagements, meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over lunch and coffee before joining Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a metro ride and a temple visit in Chennai.

The back-to-back appearances come as Vijay’s growing national profile sparks speculation about his political ambitions. While sections of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have raised slogans projecting him as a future Prime Minister, the Congress continues to position Rahul Gandhi as its preferred face for the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

Vijay’s meeting with Rahul appeared to reaffirm ties between the TVK government and its Congress ally. At the same time, his participation in Modi’s official programme highlighted the importance of maintaining working relations with the Union government.

Although Vijay has described the BJP as an ideological opponent, his administration must coordinate with the Centre on funding, infrastructure and development schemes. The TVK has also avoided portraying every disagreement with the Union government as a direct political confrontation.

Electricity Minister and TVK leader Nirmal Kumar said the Chief Minister’s engagements served different purposes. He described the meeting with Rahul as a personal and political interaction, while emphasising that the engagement with Modi was part of an official government programme focused on Tamil Nadu’s development.

Modi, meanwhile, stressed that political changes in the state would not alter his commitment to Tamil Nadu. He referred to his past working relationships with former chief ministers J. Jayalalithaa, Edappadi K. Palaniswami and M. K. Stalin before expressing his willingness to work with Vijay.

However, the cooperative tone has yet to produce specific assurances on several requests submitted by the state government. Vijay has sought the release of withheld funds, the widening of three highways to six lanes, recognition of Tamil as an official language in the Madras High Court, approval for Chennai Metro Phase III, metro projects for Madurai and Coimbatore, and a metro connection between Hosur and Bommasandra.

With national ambitions, alliance management and state development all in play, Vijay faces the challenge of balancing ideological opposition with the practical demands of governing.
