Vijay uses Assembly speech to target opposition, defend government

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay brought a familiar element of his public speaking style into the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday, blending political criticism with humour and storytelling during his response to the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address.

The proceedings became heated, with repeated exchanges between the ruling side and Opposition members. The tension eventually led to a walkout by DMK legislators after several confrontations, including remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin.

During his speech, Vijay strongly criticised the previous administration, accusing it of financial misconduct and promising strict action against anyone involved in misusing public funds. He said his government would ensure that taxpayer money remains protected and that those responsible for corruption, whether past or present, would face consequences.

The Chief Minister also dismissed allegations that parties supporting his government had been persuaded to leave the Opposition alliance. Referring to statements made by the CPI and CPI(M), he argued that both parties had independently decided to support his administration.

Vijay further challenged the DMK’s record on social justice and representation. Highlighting the composition of his Cabinet, he pointed to the number of ministers from Scheduled Caste communities and said his government had taken significant steps toward inclusive governance. He also noted the presence of women ministers in his Cabinet as evidence of broader representation.

In a lighter moment, Vijay narrated a humorous story about an elderly man searching for someone’s father, drawing laughter from the House. He later clarified that it was merely a playful anecdote and should not be interpreted incorrectly.

The speech also included indirect references to former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his constituency of Kolathur, prompting enthusiastic reactions from ruling-party legislators. The session offered one of the clearest indications yet of Vijay’s political style as Chief Minister, combining criticism, symbolism, and humour in a legislative setting.
