Vijay unveils plan to build new Assembly-Secretariat complex in Chennai at Rs. 1,200 crore
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced a proposal to build a new Assembly and Secretariat complex in Chennai, with the project estimated to cost around Rs 1,200 crore.
The proposed facility, spread across nearly 20 lakh square feet, is expected to combine modern infrastructure with facilities for the Assembly, Secretariat and various government departments. The government intends to bring multiple departments together within a single integrated campus.
Speaking in the Assembly, Vijay said expanding the existing Secretariat at Fort St George was not feasible because of the historic site’s heritage significance and physical limitations.
The new complex is expected to include extensive parking, conference facilities and other modern amenities for government officials, visitors and members of the public. It is also being planned as a future-ready administrative centre.
The Chief Minister stressed that the creation of a new complex would not affect the status of Fort St George. He said the historic site would continue to be protected and its heritage character would remain intact.
The government has not yet disclosed the final location of the proposed complex. Sources indicate that areas such as Pattinapakkam, Nandambakkam, Guindy and Koyambedu are among those being examined.
