“Vaazhai ” Movie Review

‘VAZHAI’ is a rural backdrop, the film sheds light on the challenges faced by the villagers

Mari Selvaraj quickly established himself as a notable filmmaker in Tamil cinema with three films of Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan and Mamannan. Mari Selvaraj, a former associate of Pa. Ranjith, remains true to his mentor’s approach by focusing on caste-based themes that resonate deeply in his works.

Mari Selvaraj’s films are a blend of fact and fiction, with narratives that often reflect his own experiences. The claim that his films are based on true events adds a layer of authenticity to his storytelling. His childhood memories vividly come to life in his screenplays, which are further elevated by the stunning cinematography of Theni Eswar and the captivating music of Santhosh Narayanan.

In his films, the storytelling is anchored around the protagonist and his close friend, both of whom are mischievous and full of life. The characters are richly developed, with one having an innocent crush on his teacher while the other accompanies him on his adventures. The film captures the essence of rural life, with the local slang and natural dialogue delivery by the cast adding to its authenticity.

The narrative takes a poignant turn in the second half, where the story delves into the hardships faced by the workers who toil in the fields, cutting and carrying plantains for market. The meticulous detailing of their labor is both moving and thought-provoking. The climax, in particular, is powerful and sure to touch the hearts of viewers, leaving a lasting impact.

Mari Selvaraj’s work is a testament to his ability to create cinema that is not only visually and musically rich but also deeply rooted in the socio-cultural realities of his characters. His films are a celebration of life, with all its joys and sorrows, and they offer a unique perspective that is both enlightening and emotionally resonant.
