TVK sweeps Madurantakam and Dharapuram bypolls, strengthening its political position in Tamil Nadu
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has secured victories in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections, delivering a significant boost to the party’s political standing in Tamil Nadu. The results mark an important electoral test for the ruling party as it faced established rivals Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
According to reports, TVK candidate K. Maragatham Kumaravel won Madurantakam with 67,825 votes, defeating the DMK candidate by 19,312 votes. In Dharapuram, TVK candidate P. Sathyabama secured victory with 60,333 votes, finishing 9,645 votes ahead of the DMK candidate. The AIADMK finished third in Dharapuram, according to the reported figures.
The outcome in both constituencies gives TVK a stronger position in the state’s political landscape. Although the party has emerged as a major force following the 2026 Assembly election, the bypolls offered a fresh opportunity to measure its ability to retain voter support in individual constituencies.
Madurantakam and Dharapuram are particularly significant because the by-elections followed the departure of their sitting AIADMK legislators to TVK. The contests therefore tested whether the political shift by the former legislators would translate into electoral support for their new party affiliation. TVK’s victories suggest that it was able to consolidate sufficient backing to win both seats.
In Madurantakam, K. Maragatham Kumaravel secured a comfortable victory for TVK. Her reported margin of 19,312 votes over the DMK candidate made the constituency a substantial win for the ruling party.
The result also carries significance for the AIADMK, which had held the seat before the by-election. With TVK winning after the previous legislator’s move to the party, the contest became a test of whether the new political alignment could secure a fresh mandate from voters.
P. Sathyabama’s victory in Dharapuram gave TVK a second constituency win on the same counting day. The reported margin of 9,645 votes over the DMK candidate established a clear lead, although the contest attracted attention as the counting progressed.
The DMK’s second-place finish and the AIADMK’s third-place position underline the challenge facing both established parties as TVK seeks to expand its support. The result also provides the ruling party with an additional legislative seat and a fresh opportunity to consolidate its presence beyond the immediate aftermath of the Assembly election.
Polling for the two by-elections took place on October 6. Contemporary reports put turnout at approximately 86% in Madurantakam and 80.3% in Dharapuram. Both figures were lower than the turnout reported for the April 2026 Assembly election, indicating that participation was not as high as in the general election.
