TVK allocates Tamil Nadu Rajya Sabha Seat to Congress
The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has decided to allot its Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu to its alliance partner, the Indian National Congress, ahead of the upcoming Upper House election scheduled for June 18. A decision in this regard was taken by Chief Minister and TVK founder C. Joseph Vijay
The decision is being viewed as a significant gesture within the ruling alliance, underscoring the growing cooperation between TVK and Congress following the recent political developments in Tamil Nadu.
According to party sources, senior Congress functionary and political strategist Praveen Chakravarty is expected to emerge as the party’s candidate for the seat. His nomination papers are likely to be filed in the coming days.
The vacancy arose after former Rajya Sabha member C. Ve. Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House following his election to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The resulting by-election is scheduled to be held later this month.
In political circles, the Rajya Sabha election had initially been viewed as a possible opportunity for the relatively new TVK to secure representation in Parliament. However, the decision to support Congress reflects a broader strategy aimed at strengthening coalition unity and accommodating partners within the ruling front.
