“Thodarum” Movie Review

Thodarum: A Positive Turn in Mohanlal’s Career

Thodarum stands tall as a glowing reminder of Mohanlal’s enduring brilliance, marking a heartwarming return to the kind of cinema that made him a household name. Helmed by director Tharun Moorthy, this film beautifully balances nostalgic charm with a fresh narrative, offering audiences both familiarity and surprise. The story begins on a light, humorous note but gradually shifts into a gripping emotional journey, as Mohanlal’s character, Benz Shanmugham, sets out to reclaim his beloved car from the police.

The screenplay by K.R. Sunil is layered and intelligent, incorporating a natural disaster into the plot with finesse. This adds emotional weight and brings a deeper message without overwhelming the core narrative. Tharun Moorthy’s direction deserves appreciation for maintaining a fine balance between fan-pleasing moments and grounded storytelling, proving he can handle a star of Mohanlal’s stature without letting the script take a backseat.

Mohanlal delivers a nuanced performance that captures a wide emotional spectrum — playful, passionate, and deeply moving. It’s a timely reminder that great writing brings out the best in great actors. Rather than relying on visual spectacle or loud promotions, Thodarum thrives on sincerity, character depth, and emotional honesty.

The supporting cast adds credibility to the story. Prakash Varma and Binu Pappu shine in their respective roles, while Shobana, although underused, adds grace to her limited screen time. The film’s interval point is a standout moment, full of tension and anticipation.

Though the final act could have been tighter, and some intense scenes like police brutality toned down, these minor issues don’t overshadow the film’s overall strength. With its rich emotions and meaningful storytelling, Thodarum is more than just a comeback for Mohanlal — it’s a reminder of what meaningful cinema can feel like.

In essence, Thodarum is a satisfying, emotionally resonant film that reaffirms Mohanlal’s place at the top, while introducing a new generation to the kind of storytelling that stands the test of time.
