Tamil Nadu Rains: IMD issues ‘orange alert’, NDRF teams deployed

The IMD has issued an ‘orange alert’ for the several districts of Tamil Nadu forecasting heavy downpour in next 24 hours.

Latest reports say that several schools across Chennai and other districts remained shut on Thursday.

A day’s holiday for schools were declared in these districts – Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), moderate to heavy rainfall will continue across multiple districts of Tamil Nadu for the next 24 hours.

Heavy rains continued overnight in Chennai and neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, and some areas in the Cauvery delta region.

The regional weather office has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts in the state, besides the neighbouring union territory Puducherry.

Further, the IMD has predicted that the rains in Tamil Nadu may continue till December 16. Reports say that the state administration has also deployed NDRF and other emergency staff in the wake of the rain alert.
