Tamil Nadu plans weekly ethnic wear day for government staff

The Tamil Nadu government is considering introducing a weekly ethnic wear day for government employees to promote traditional clothing and support the state’s handloom sector.

Tamil Development Minister A Rajmohan announced the proposal during Tamil Nadu Day celebrations on November 1. He said the initiative would also extend to members of the state cabinet, although a date for its implementation has not yet been announced.

Recalling an occasion when Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay wore a silk dhoti and shirt, Rajmohan said the traditional attire gave the event a festive atmosphere. He suggested encouraging government officials and employees to wear traditional clothing, such as dhotis and shirts, once a week.

According to the minister, the chief minister approved the proposal after learning that government employees had also expressed interest in the idea.

The move is expected to encourage the use of traditional garments while providing greater support to Tamil Nadu’s weavers and textile industry.
