Tamil Nadu govt renames Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme after Kamaraj

The Tamil Nadu government has renamed the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme as the Perunthalaivar c, honouring former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.

The breakfast programme, introduced by the previous DMK government for students from Classes I to V in government schools, will continue under the new name. The present TVK government has also announced plans to extend the scheme to students up to Class VIII from September 17, marking Periyar’s birth anniversary.

The renaming is part of a series of changes introduced by the state government. Earlier, the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme was renamed the Skill Development Scheme, while the free bus travel programme for women was renamed from Mahalir Vidiyal Payanam to Mahalir Payanam.

The government is also reportedly considering renaming the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam, under which eligible women heads of families receive ₹1,000 every month, to Mathippumigu Mahalir Thittam.
