Tamil Nadu government jobs: Five-year age limit extension brings major relief to aspirants
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced a five-year extension of the upper age limit for direct recruitment to government jobs, offering fresh opportunities to thousands of candidates who were close to exceeding the existing age criteria.
According to an official government release, the relaxation will apply in addition to existing age limits and benefits already available to candidates from reserved communities, including BC, BC(M), MBC & DNC, SC, ST and destitute widows.
The decision follows requests from job aspirants seeking more time to compete for government positions.
Under the revised rules, the maximum age for General category candidates applying for Group-I posts has been increased from 32 to 37 years. For reserved category candidates, the limit rises from 37 to 42 years.
For Persons with Disabilities (PwD), the upper age limit for General category applicants has been raised from 42 to 47 years, while reserved category candidates can now apply up to 52 years.
For Group-II and Group-II-A recruitment, the General category age limit has been increased from 30 to 35 years. Reserved category candidates will continue to have no upper age restriction under the revised provisions.
PwD applicants under Group-II and Group-II-A can now apply up to 45 years in the General category and 47 years in reserved categories, compared with the previous limits of 40 and 42 years.
Candidates belonging to SC, ST and destitute widow categories will see their upper age limit increase from 35 to 40 years. For PwD candidates in these groups, the limit has been extended from 45 to 50 years.
The revised age criteria will remain effective for five years beginning October 30, 2026.
The government expects the move to benefit tens of thousands of aspirants, particularly those who risked losing eligibility because of the existing age restrictions.
