Tamil Nadu government decides to retain Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar beyond retirement
The Tamil Nadu government has initiated steps to secure an extension of service for Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar, whose retirement is due later this year. The State has reportedly approached the Union Government seeking approval to continue his tenure beyond the scheduled superannuation date, citing administrative continuity and ongoing governance priorities.
Sai Kumar, a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, assumed office as Chief Secretary in April 2026 following a high-level bureaucratic reshuffle ordered during the Assembly election period. Before taking charge as the State’s top bureaucrat, he served in key positions including Revenue Administration and Disaster Management.
Quoting sources, reports said the request for extension has been made in view of the administrative transition following the formation of the new government and the need to ensure continuity in policy implementation. It is believed that retaining an experienced officer at the helm of the bureaucracy would help maintain stability in governance and facilitate coordination across departments.
Since assuming office, Sai Kumar has overseen several important administrative decisions, including transfers and postings of senior IAS officers and coordination of key state-level governance initiatives. His role has been particularly significant during a period marked by political transition and institutional restructuring.
