Tamil Nadu electricity sector debt reaches ₹2.47 lakh crore: White Paper

Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar released a White Paper on Thursday outlining the financial and operational condition of the State’s power sector.

The report states that the combined debt of the four major electricity-related corporations in Tamil Nadu has reached approximately ₹2.47 lakh crore. These entities include the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL), Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Limited (TNPGCL), Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL), and Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO).

Addressing the media, the Minister said consumers would not face any additional burden due to tariff revisions, including the annual adjustment of 3.57% scheduled for this year.

The White Paper highlights challenges such as financial losses, ageing transmission and distribution infrastructure, shortages in manpower, and gaps in power generation capacity. It also points to the need for substantial upgrades to the electricity network.

Nirmalkumar said the document was intended to explain the current condition of the sector and examine the impact of previous tariff revisions. According to him, earlier increases in electricity charges did not significantly improve the financial position of the power utilities because of rising expenditure, particularly on power procurement.
