Fits to a tea
STORY
Anjala is a popular tea shop which is more than a century old. It is being run by Muthirulandi (Pasupathy). A bunch of youth Kavas (Vemal), Kalyana Raman (Aadukalam Murugadoss) and Jogging Chellapa (Imman Annachi) treat the outlet as their second home.
A rude shock awaits them one day, as the government decides to demolish the tea shop for National Highway project. Following this, Muthirulandi and others go to the court get stay order in their favour.
In the meantime, a feud is running between Anjala gang and a local politician (Subbu Panchu), due to an incident involving Kavas’ love interest Uthra (Nandita). The politico is waiting for a right opportunity to take revenge against them.
Meanwhile, members of Anjala team start developing a feeling that the tea shop is preventing them from going up in life. How Muthirulandi manages to save the shop besides helping the youngster settle in life is the rest of Anjala.
ANALYSIS
No other Tamil film has showed a tea shop with this much detailing. Director Thangam Saravanan and his team deserve a pat for this. Also, a message is ably conveyed that we should not forget our roots in the name of development.
But the usual clichés of Kollywood are plenty in Anjala and these things hold us back from fully enjoying the film. However, simple narration and power-packed performance by Pasupathy up the film’s level.
Vemal is in his usual elements as a rural youth who has fun with his friends. Nandita fits well to village belle role and others in the cast are adequate. Gopi Sundar’s music and Praveen KL’s editing have done good to Anjala.
In 112 minutes, Anjala provides ‘medium’ dose of entertainment. In short, it is for those who would prefer sipping tea in glass tumbler. If you are of paper cup or star hotel type, you can look for other options.
