Tamil Movie Review

Karnan movie review

Story:

Karnan (Dhaunsh) is a young man waiting for a military job in a village in southern Tamil Nadu.

They don’t have a school, a hospital, not even a bus stop, despite having petitioned for it multiple times.

They are forced to use the bus stop in a neighbouring village. One day this bus is attacked for not stopping in the village.

This leads to a series of incidents where the people of the village standup for their rights, what happens next forms the rest of the story.

Analysis:

One of the strengths of Karnan is Maari Selvaraj’s writing. He has breathed soul into each and every character in the movie.

Dhanush is fantastic as Karnan and carries the intense role. He has authentically established the changes in his character. The rest of the cast have also performed well and create an impact in taking the story forward.

The first half takes its own time to establish the characters and feels too long. However, the pace picks ups in the second half. The movie is not about just one person, but is an culmination of events.

The film has its highs and lows as some of the scenes are stretched too far. The direction is patchy at times.

Maari Selvaraj has used metaphors to make the proceedings interesting. Santhosh Narayanan’s BGM and songs add more energy to the movie. Theni Eswar’s camera has captured the essence of the village perfectly.
