Man of the masses

STORY:

Sakthi (Sivakarthikeyan) is a rank holder, but he is forced to sell his certificate due to circumstances. Eventually, he buries his dreams and becomes a fake certificate maker in north Chennai.

Sathyamurthy (Arjun) runs an educational institution, that offers free education to students who were considered as failures. It helps them shine in fields in which they are good at.

Then there is Mahadev (Abhay Deol), an evil entrepreneur, who describes himself as ‘naan padippa vechu vyabaram panravan illa, padikkaravana vechu vyabaram panravan’.

One day, Madhi (Ivana), whom Sakthi considers as his sister, loses her life due to corrupt education system. Sathyamurthy wants to change the system and Mahadev poses hurdle.

This results in Sakthi becoming a superhero and he is aptly aided by Sathyamurthy and his students. Is he able to bring down the empire of Mahadev?

ANALYSIS:

The surprise in Hero is that it is a tribute (or you can even call it a sequel) to Shankar’s 1993 blockbuster Gentleman.

Arjun continues his Krishnamurthy character as Sathyamurthy and we are even told in the back story that he robbed the rich to build an educational institution that offers free education to everyone.

When Krishnamurthy, sorry, Sathyamurthy, feels that a ‘Gentleman’ is not enough to change the present system, a superman arrives in the form of Sakthi (Sivakarthikeyan).

Sivakarthikeyan has performed with passion and deserves kudos. And equal appreciation goes to Arjun, who is strong and super. Abhay Deol’s is usual villain character, while Kalyani Priyadarshan makes welcome debut.

George C William’s has lent great support to director P S Mithran’s conviction and characters. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is another advantage of the movie.

Mithran has continued his success streak of Irumbu Thirai and Hero is a good entertainer with a message that would be apt for this holiday season. Hero, despite its flaws and cliches, is a family film.
