Champion: Goal post

STORY:

Jones (Vishwa) is a youngster from North Chennai and his dream is to become a leading football player. But his mother Jaya (Vasavi) is opposed to his aspirations and wants him concentrate on studies.

The reason is: Jones’ father Gopinath Dhiraviyam (Manoj Bharathiraja) too was a football player and he was killed in 7s football, a dangerous sport.

However, Jones decides to chase his dream and even joins a club led by coach Santha (Narain). He also comes to know that Santha is none other than his father’s friend.

Jones also understands that Gopinath Dhiraviyam was brutally murdered by a local politico Dhanasekar (Stunt Shiva) during a football match. Jones now has to decide between football and revenge.

ANALYSIS:

Director Suseenthiran, who showed enormous promise in his initial films like Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and Naan Mahan Alla and then gave us many forgettable movies, bounces like a football in Champion.

Though there is a mad rush of sports movies in Kollywood, Champion stands out thanks to authentic scenes, raw performance and natural narration.

Vishwa delivers a solid performance, while Naren gets another big opportunity after the recent Kaithi. And the Anjathey actor does enough justice. The likes of Manoj, Stunt Shiva, Vasavi and Mrinalini are okay.

Aroll Corell’s music is a huge plus point, while Sujith Sarang’s cinematography and editing are the other highlights. Though some scenes remind us of some earlier movies, Champion is Suseenthiran’s best in the recent years.
