Sangathamizhan : Familiar person
STORY:
Murugan (Vijay Sethupathi) is a carefree youth who lives in Chennai and wants to become an actor. He spends most of his time with his friend (Soori).
He falls for the daughter (Raashi Khanna) of a rich industrialist Sanjay (Ravi Kishan) and she too reciprocates to his love. As Sanjay comes to know about his daughter’s affair, he wants to bump off Murugan.
But, he gets the shock of his life when he meets Murugan, for Murugan looks exactly like Sangathamizhan (Vijay Sethupathi again), a mass leader in a village.
Thamizhan leads the protest of villagers against a copper plant to be set up by Sanjay. Now, Sanjay finishes off Thamizhan, strikes a deal with Murugan and asks him to go to village and act as Thamizhan.
Murugan too goes to the village and starts acting as Thamizhan to help Sanjay build the copper plant. But, justice starts prevailing slowly.
ANALYSIS:
Sangathamizhan is a regular story and doesn’t have anything new to offer to the audience. But the biggest saving grace of the film is Vijay Sethupathi, whose performance makes us sit up and watch the movie.
Both Raashi Khanna and Nivetha Pethuraj play regular heroines, while it is refreshing to see Soori in the company of Vijay Sethupathi. Though there are Ravi Kishan and Ashutosh Rana in baddie roles, none of their characters are interesting.
Songs and background score by Vijay-Mervin fit well to the template of a mass movie, while Velraj’s cinematography too is good. The film is too long and needs trimming, especially in the second half.
Those who found fault with Atlee for scenes ‘inspired’ from other movies in his films, should focus a bit on director Vijay Chander too. For, the script and scenes of Sangathamizhan remind us of a lot of old hits.
All said, Sangathamizhan is a template mass masala entertainer that shows Vijay Sethupathi as a demi-God. Those who are game for such films and fans of the actor can enjoy the film.
