Three in one

STORY:

Thalapathi (Vijay) is a do-gooder in a rural area and his aim is to provide good and affordable medical care to people. But he is cheated by Dr Daniel (S J Suryah).

Not just that, Daniel is also responsible for the death of Thalapathi and his wife (Nithya Menon). Thalapathi’s two sons grow as Vetri, a magician and Maran, a doctor (both characters played by Vijay).

Vetri, who knows the past, wants to take revenge on Daniel, who now runs a hospital chain. Also, he wants to teach a fitting lesson to all those who misuse the noble medical profession to make money in illegal ways.

The magician is on a killing spree, but the blame falls on the doctor. Soon, the truth is revealed, but only after a cat and mouse game and loads of messages.

ANALYSIS:

It’s Deepavali triple shot from Vijay, who simply excels in all three roles. If you want us to put it in a sequence based on performance, then it must be Thalapathi, Vetri and Maaran.

While Thalapathi impresses us in a big way with ample mass moments and with his innocent noble intentions, the magician is a treat to watch, especially to kids. And the doctor has only limited scope to perform (but he gets the biggest honour in the end).

And there are three heroines- Nithya Menon, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Kajal Aggarwal, but the one who steals the show is Nithya. Vadivelu tries to tickle the funny bone, while Sathyaraj’s character performance is good.

Ace Telugu script writer Vijayendra Prasad, who had penned the story for almost all flicks of his son S S Rajamouli including Baahubali, has come up with a dated script this time. However, screenplay and packaging make all the difference.

G K Vishnu’s cinematography doesn’t look like it was by a newcomer. It is grand and glossy. A R Rahman is good in Aaalaporan Tamilan and background score. Talking about editing, the film could have certainly been trimmed more, as it is too lengthy.

Director Atlee, who gave us the memorable Theri in the company of Vijay, has tried to score big once again and is almost successful in it.

He knows how to portray mass scenes and how to play with emotions. With a strong team of cast and crew, Atlee has delivered it once again to the full satisfaction of Vijay fans.
