Tamil director V Sekar passes away at the age of 74
Veteran Tamil filmmaker V Sekar passed away on 14 November 2025 in Chennai after a prolonged illness.
He was born in the early 1950s (1951/52) in Neivanatham near Tiruvannamalai and began his career by assisting filmmakers before debuting as director with Neengalum Herothan in 1990.
Sekar was widely known for his middle-class family dramas such as Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, Kaalam Maari Pochu and Viralukketha Veekkam, which combined entertainment with social messaging on issues like dowry, alcohol, women’s financial autonomy and youth unemployment.
His passing leaves a significant void in Tamil cinema’s space of socially-rooted family films; his aesthetic of relatable characters and domestic settings had made his work resonate with thousands of middle-class viewers.
