Swasika says Nooru Saami changed her understanding of motherhood

Actress Swasika has said that working on director Sasi’s upcoming film Nooru Saami gave her a fresh perspective on motherhood and the expectations society places on mothers.

The film reportedly challenges the traditional tendency to place mothers on a pedestal and instead portrays them as individuals with their own needs, emotions and aspirations. Through its central character, the story explores whether mothers should always be viewed as symbols of sacrifice or simply as human beings deserving of happiness and fulfillment.

Swasika, who plays Selvi, a single mother, said the film prompted her to reflect on how rarely people pause to consider their mothers’ personal happiness. According to the actress, families often take mothers’ emotional well-being for granted and seldom make time to understand what they truly want from life.

Speaking about her character, Swasika explained that Selvi is markedly different from Yashoda, the character she portrayed in Lubber Pandhu. While both women have unfulfilled dreams, she described Selvi as someone who openly voices her feelings and choices, unlike Yashoda, who internalizes her disappointments and quietly accepts her circumstances.

According to the actress, one of the film’s key takeaways is that women should not feel guilty about wanting happiness, companionship or personal fulfillment. She added that learning to establish boundaries and pursue one’s aspirations is not selfish, but an essential part of living a meaningful life.
