Suriya’s Jai Bhim in trouble again
Suriya’s Jai Bhim is back in the headlines. This time, V Kulanjiyappan filed a complaint against director TJ Gnanavel and the producers (Suriya, Jyotika) for allegedly stealing the story from him. Based on the complaint, Chennai police filed an FIR under section of the Copyright Act.
Earlier, Vanniyar Sangam filed a case against Jai Bhim for portraying the community in a bad light.
Suriya’s Jai Bhim, directed by TJ Gnaanvel, is based on true events. The film premiered directly on Amazon Prime Video, skipping theatrical release.
In his complaint, V Kulanjiyappan wrote that the makers of Jai Bhim used his story, but failed to pay him royalties. According to his complaint, a character in the film is based on his life. After a direction from the magistrate court, Chennai Police registered a case under Section 63 (a) of the Copyright Act.
According to him, he explained the hardships he endured while he was tortured in the Kammapuram police station in 1993. Kulanjiyappan said that TJ Gnaanvel met him at his residence in January 2019 and gathered details about the incident.
Kulanjiyappan alleged that the Jai Bhim team promised to pay him Rs 50 lakh as royalty along with a share in profits.
