Suriya-starrer Karuppu’s release delayed, 9 am shows cancelled

Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s Karuppu ran into a last-minute release issue on Thursday, May 14, with its scheduled 9 am shows being cancelled just hours before the film’s premiere.

The update came after theatre owners flagged a brewing financial hurdle on May 13.

Producer SR Prabu announced the cancellation on X at around 1 am on May 14 and apologised to viewers. He wrote, “Due to unavoidable reasons 9am shows will be cancelled for Karuppu. Our sincere apologies to everyone! (sic).”

Earlier, director-actor RJ Balaji had acknowledged the financial issues and said he was confident the producers would resolve them by the night of May 13. However, the issues remained unresolved, leading to the delay in the film’s release plans.

Talk of a possible postponement had begun after fans noticed that several theatre chains had removed the film’s listings from booking platforms. Soon after, theatre owners also shared posts referring to internal financial issues.

Following SR Prabu’s announcement, several fans expressed disappointment in the comments section, saying they had been waiting for the film for over two years.

The development also came after the Karuppu team had sought permission from the Tamil Nadu government for 9 am shows in the state, which Chief Minister Vijay had approved.

Karuppu stars Suriya in the lead and also features Trisha Krishnan, Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maaya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, Yogi Babu, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Aadukalam Naren, Namo Narayana, Deepa Shankar, Lollu Sabha Maaran and Jaffer Sadiq.
