Southern Railway approves Railway Terminal at Perambur at a cost of Rs 428 crore

A new railway terminal has been proposed in the Perambur area, receiving approval from Southern Railway’s General Manager, RN Singh.

The project, estimated to cost ₹428 crore, is currently awaiting final sanction from the MAS division.

According to Southern Railway sources, the terminal will be developed on land currently occupied by the General Stores Depot.

Originally planned for Villivakkam, the fourth terminal was shifted to Perambur due to sufficient land availability, a point confirmed by GM Singh during a media interaction in July.

Chennai currently has two operational railway terminals—Chennai Central and Egmore—while a third terminal is under development at Tambaram.

The new Perambur terminal is expected to significantly ease congestion at Chennai Central, further improving rail connectivity in the city.
