Shawarma death: All TN hotels to be checked
Days after a 14-year-old girl died after eating chicken shawarma from a restaurant in Namakkal town in Tamil Nadu, a team of food safety officers conducted raids at over 90 shawarma shops in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu and seized 70 kg of chicken.
“We inspected 90 shops and confiscated 70 kg of chicken. We have sealed two shops,” said Jayarama Pandian, Food Safety Officer, Madurai.
Health and family welfare minister Ma Subramaniam on Tuesday ordered a departmental inquiry against the district-designated officer of the state food safety department, Dr. K. C. Arun.
He also directed officials to inspect all hotels to see if government guidelines were being followed.
Besides the tragic death, several medical students had fallen ill after eating non-vegetarian food from the same restaurant and were undergoing treatment.
As many as 43 people, including 13 medical college students, five children, and a pregnant woman who had consumed food items like shawarma, fried rice, and grilled chicken from the eatery, are among those admitted to the hospitals in the district.
