SC set aside order temporarily staying a Haryana government order on 75 per cent reservation for locals
The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside a Punjab and Haryana High Court order temporarily staying a Haryana government order on 75 per cent reservation for locals in private sector jobs.
Earlier this month Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar’s government had moved the Supreme Court against the Punjab and Haryana High Court order halting reservation of private sector jobs for locals.
The High Court called the decision unsustainable and against natural justice, and said it had failed to find merit in arguments on treating the law as valid in the interests of Haryana’s jobless.
The state, however, has argued before the Supreme Court that the High Court passed its decision after a hearing of just ninety seconds. It has also argued that its lawyer was not heard.
The Supreme Court today asked the High Court to hear the matter fully and rule in four weeks.
Significantly, the Haryana government has also been told to refrain from taking coercive steps against private sector employers opting not to follow the contentious new law, at this time.
