Saamaniyan Movie Review

A Positive Message to the Public

R Rakesh’s “Saamaniyan” starring Ramarajan, is an ambitious vigilante film that tackles significant societal issues with a commendable premise. Ramarajan’s return to the screen is marked by his portrayal of Sankara Narayanan, a common man who courageously confronts the banking system that preys on the middle class.

From the moment Sankara exits the bus, folding his veshti to the nostalgic tune of ‘Madura Marikkozhunthu Vaasam,’ the film establishes his character as someone unafraid to voice his concerns about societal injustices. This immediately endears him to the audience and sets the stage for his transformation into a vigilante. His chemistry with Radha Ravi and MS Bhaskar, coupled with his effortless comedic timing in the second half, make his performance a highlight.

Ilaiyaraaja’s music is another shining element in the film. The songs ‘Thathiva Thathiva’ and ‘Oli Veesum’ inject vibrant energy into the narrative, complementing the film’s emotional arcs beautifully. The musical compositions resonate well with the audience, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Despite the film’s dense plot, there are moments that capture the essence of a vigilante’s journey effectively. The movie’s commitment to addressing the struggles of the middle-class Indian, and its critique of the banking system, are both relevant and thought-provoking. The scenes where Sankara takes a stand against everyday issues, like chiding a bus employee for stopping at a disliked hotel, reflect his character’s integrity and dedication to justice.

“Saamaniyan” may have a layered narrative, but it also offers a platform for reflection on societal norms and injustices. The film’s heartfelt attempt to blend action with social commentary, along with nostalgic callbacks to Ramarajan’s filmography, creates a unique cinematic experience. Even the scene where a woman at a bank recognizes Sankara as a hero from the 1990s adds a touch of charm and nostalgia, paying homage to Ramarajan’s illustrious career.

In conclusion, “Saamaniyan” is a film with noble intentions and an impactful message. While it may have its complexities, the film’s core, bolstered by Ramarajan’s engaging performance and Ilaiyaraaja’s soulful music, makes it a memorable journey. It stands as a testament to the power of cinema to address societal issues while entertaining the audience.
