S. Janaki, legendary singer who gave voice to generations, dies at 88

The world of Indian music has lost one of its most treasured voices. Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly celebrated as the “Nightingale of South India” and “Isai Arasi” (Queen of Music), passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind an extraordinary musical legacy that spans nearly seven decades.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, S. Janaki began her playback singing career in the late 1950s, making her Tamil debut with the film Vidhiyin Vilayattu (1957). What followed was one of the most remarkable careers in Indian cinema. She recorded more than 40,000 songs across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and several other Indian languages, becoming one of the most versatile and beloved voices in the country’s history.
Her ability to breathe life into every lyric—whether through soulful melodies, romantic duets, devotional hymns, or emotionally charged compositions—made her a favourite of generations of music lovers. She collaborated with the greatest composers and singers of her era, including the iconic partnership with composer Ilaiyaraaja and playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, creating countless timeless classics that continue to resonate with audiences.
S. Janaki’s immense contribution to Indian music earned her four National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, along with 33 state film awards, making her one of the most decorated playback singers in Indian cinema. Her remarkable vocal range, expressive artistry, and effortless command over multiple languages set a standard few have matched.
More than her accolades, it was her voice that became the soundtrack of everyday life—echoing through homes, theatres, radios, and concert halls, comforting hearts and celebrating life’s joys and sorrows.
S. Janaki passed away due to age-related illness at her residence in Mysuru. While her passing marks the end of an era, her songs remain immortal, continuing to inspire musicians and move millions across generations.
She is survived by her family, countless admirers, and a timeless musical legacy that will forever occupy a cherished place in the history of Indian cinema.
Rest in peace, S. Janaki. Though the voice has fallen silent, the music will live on forever.
