Rameshwaram fishermen to undergo strike from today

Fishermen in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, have announced an indefinite strike starting today.

The decision comes after the recent arrest of eight fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The Rameswaram All Fishermen’s Association has also planned a series of protests, including a demonstration on August 13 and a rail blockade on August 19.

The arrests have been a recurring issue, with fishermen’s associations demanding immediate diplomatic action from both the state and central governments to secure the release of their colleagues and their boats.

The fishermen’s community claims that these arrests severely impact their livelihood and cause significant financial and emotional distress to their families.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has also raised the issue with the Union External Affairs Minister, urging for a permanent solution to the long-standing dispute over traditional fishing rights in the Palk Bay region.
