Rajinikanth’s next film ‘Thalaivar 173’ begins production

Fresh reports suggest that work on Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming project, tentatively referred to as Thalaivar 173, has begun at a large set constructed in Poonamallee.

The film is produced by Raaj Kamal Film International. Earlier speculation indicated that director Ashwath Marimuthu may have taken charge of the project, replacing Cibi Chakravarthi. Interest in the development increased after the production house shared a special birthday message for the filmmaker earlier this month.

According to recent industry reports, portions featuring other cast members are currently being filmed, while Rajinikanth is yet to join the shoot. It is also being reported that his first appearance before the camera may be for the movie’s opening song sequence.

There is further speculation that filmmaker and actor Mysskin, who previously collaborated with Ashwath Marimuthu in Dragon, could be part of the cast. However, official details regarding the storyline, supporting actors, technical crew, genre, or release schedule have not yet been announced.

The project has undergone several changes during its development. Director Sundar C was initially attached to helm the film but reportedly exited due to creative disagreements. Cibi Chakravarthi later came on board, and the film was expected to commence production in April before reports of another change in direction surfaced.

Separately, Raaj Kamal Film International is also planning another collaboration involving Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in a project to be directed by Nelson. The film is currently being referred to by the working title KHxRK Reunion.
