PM Modi to inaugurate Poonamallee to Vadapalani Metro line on October 11
The long-awaited Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II could be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, according to sources. The proposed programme may also include a train journey by Modi from Poonamallee to Porur.
The Prime Minister’s tentative schedule is expected to include a visit to IIT Madras and a public event where several development projects could be inaugurated. The Vellore airport is among the projects reportedly under consideration. The final itinerary is yet to be officially released.
Once services begin, trains on the 14.6-km stretch are expected to run at intervals of around 10 minutes. Chennai Metro Rail is likely to deploy approximately 15 trains for the initial operations.
The opening would represent a significant step in the 118.9-km Phase II network. The Poonamallee–Porur portion of Corridor 4, which ultimately connects Poonamallee Bypass with Lighthouse, had originally been targeted for completion in December last year.
Additional work was later carried out to strengthen the connection with the Phase I network at Vadapalani, with February 2026 set as a revised target. The entire Poonamallee–Vadapalani section, passing through Porur, received the final clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety only in May.
