Parandur airport project leaves landowners seeking clarity
Residents and farmers who surrendered their land for the proposed Parandur airport are increasingly concerned about the project’s future, as progress appears to have slowed after significant land acquisition efforts.
A farmer from Nagapattu village reportedly said he initially opposed giving up his agricultural land but eventually agreed, believing the airport would contribute to the state’s development and create large-scale employment opportunities. Although he received compensation, he now questions the decision as visible progress on the project remains limited.
The proposed airport, announced in 2022, is expected to be developed in multiple phases with an estimated investment of ₹27,400 crore across more than 2,100 hectares. The project faced strong resistance from local communities from the outset. Following environmental and administrative clearances in 2025, land acquisition moved forward, with nearly 1,700 acres reportedly acquired before election-related restrictions slowed the process.
Affected residents say they are eager for a clear decision. While many would prefer to remain in their native villages, they want the government to either proceed with the project quickly or provide certainty about future plans. Several families have also requested improved compensation packages, employment assurances, and relocation to areas they consider more suitable than the currently proposed resettlement sites.
