Arunachalam Muruganantham from Tamil Nadu has been awarded the Central Government’s highest Padma Shri award for developing machines that produce sanitary pads at very low prices, with the noble aim that only when women’s welfare improves can the entire society progress. He has successfully overcome countless challenges and obstacles and has significantly improved women’s menstrual hygiene from cities to villages.
It is noteworthy that the life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who played a major role in changing the unhygienic practice of using cloths during menstruation, has been made into a film titled ‘Batman’ starring popular Hindi actor Akshay Kumar.
Now, Arunachalam Muruganantham has teamed up with renowned poet P. Vijay to create an awareness song on menstruation as a key part of his next ambitious journey to dispel myths about it and create awareness about maintaining complete menstrual hygiene.
The announcement of the song was made today (August 26), Women’s Equality Day. Speaking about it, Arunachalam Muruganantham said, “While awareness about menstrual and uterine health has been making a huge positive impact, the coronavirus pandemic has caused a slowdown. Now that we are back in it with full force, we are going to create this song to create awareness among the people.”
He continued, “This song will be released in various languages around the world. Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we pledge to protect women’s health.”

With the noble vision that the progress of women’s health ensures the growth of the entire society, Arunachalam Muruganantham—who overcame numerous challenges and barriers to invent machines that produce low-cost sanitary pads, thereby significantly improving menstrual hygiene from cities to rural areas—was honored with India’s prestigious Padma Shri award.

Currently, as a major step in his next mission to achieve breaking the taboos and 100% Menstrual Hygiene awareness, Arunachalam Muruganantham has collaborated with renowned poet Pa. Vijay to create an awareness song that will emotionally connect with people and spread this vital message.
The announcement of this song was made today (August 26) on the occasion of Women’s Equality Day. Speaking about the initiative, Arunachalam Muruganantham said: “Our efforts to create awareness about menstrual and uterine health have already brought about significant positive impact. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary setback. Now, we are fully committed to resuming this mission, and this song will serve as an important medium to create widespread awareness among people.”
He added: “We will first create this song in Tamil, and later it will be released in multiple languages worldwide. On this Women’s Equality Day, we pledge to protect women’s health.”
