Northeast monsoon sets in across Tamil Nadu
Northeast monsoon commenced over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala on Tuesday, the IMD has announced.
The agency said southwest monsoon withdrew from the entire country on Tuesday (Oct 15) and the northeast monsoon commenced simultaneously.
A low pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low pressure over the central parts of Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a depression and move towards north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Oct 16 for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet as these districts may receive heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain in one or two places.
